Windows 7 search in pdf documents

I did have to install under my PC's administrator account, which is a different user, I wonder if that affected it. Did Windows finish indexing? Also, if you're searching non-indexed files, you may have to prefix your search query with content:.

Guillaume Not sure. I'm now on Windows 10 which is using a filter named "Reader Search Handler" which does well with sentences for me. I'm not sure where it came from. Louis Thanks for the feedback. Good to know. Problem solved on windows7, we just need to wait much longer for the pdf results I did close the search window before it appears. Show 4 more comments. Michael S. Thanks, I didn't know this feature existed in the standard Reader. Sure is dang slow though. Didn't know this. Surprises me all the time. Best answer in my opinion. Portable and very fast, even with preview and word location when clicked on a search result entry.

Thanks for pointing out this gem. Great option here, easy and very effective. Thanks — Valdemar. Thanks man. If you need to find a specific phrase, word, or a combination of words in multiple PDF files, you usually search for it in each file one by one, which costs you a lot of time and effort. Without any doubt, Acrobat Reader is the most commonly used program for reading PDF files, and you can use it not only to read, but also to search text in multiple PDF files.

Download and install Acrobat Reader on your computer and launch it. In the search results, click the arrow to the left of the file name to see the sentences containing your search terms. For this purpose, however, you need to have a special plugin installed — PDF IFilter — which is used by Windows Search to index the contents of your files.

You will have to download and install it from the Adobe IFilter download page. Please keep in mind that Windows will need some time to index the contents of your files. It takes just a few steps to perform a search:. Download , install, and launch SeekFast.

In the search results, click on the file name to open the PDF file, or click on the sentence to view a larger part of the text. UltraFinder is yet another tool developed by the creators of the very poplar text editor UltraEdit, which allows you to perform text searches in multiple PDFs.

Download and install UltraFinder on your computer, and launch it. UltraFinder has a lot of capabilities in terms of settings and filters; however, it has even more significant shortcomings, the main one being the extremely slow search process. Our last but not least pick is the open source tool DocFetcher. Like Windows Search, DocFetcher also performs indexing of the files in the folder that you want to search. Download , install, and launch the tool.

By default, the Search window displays basic search options. Click Show More Options near the bottom of the window to display additional options. To restore the basic options, click Show Less Options near the bottom of the window. You can set a preference so that More search options always appear in the Search window.

In the Preferences dialog box under Categories, select Search. Restricts the search to the current PDF, all of a currently open PDF Portfolio if applicable , an index, or a location on your computer. What word or phrase would you like to search for. Return Results Containing. Match Exact Word Or Phrase. Searches for the entire string of characters, including spaces, in the same order in which they appear in the text box. Match Any Of The Words.

Searches for any instances of at least one of the words typed. For example, if you search for each of , the results include any instances in which one or both of the two words appear: each, of, each of , or of each. Match All Of The Words. Searches for instances that contain all your search words, but not necessarily in the order you type them.

Available only for a search of multiple PDFs or index definition files. Boolean Query. Use These Additional Criteria text options. Searches for two or more words that are separated by no more than a specified number of words, as set in the Search preferences. Available only for a search of multiple documents or index definition files, and when Match All Of The Words is selected. Finds words that contain part the stem of the specified search word. For example, a search for opening finds instances of open, opened, opens, and openly.

This option applies to single words and phrases when you search the current PDF, a folder, or an index created with Acrobat 6. Include Attachments. Use These Additional Criteria document properties. You can select multiple property-modifier-value combinations and apply them to searches.

Note : You can search by document properties alone by using document property options in combination with a search for specific text. Applies the criteria set in the three connected options to the search. The check box is selected automatically when you enter information in any of the three options for that set.

First menu property. Indicates the document characteristic to search for. Second menu modifier. Indicates the level of matching. Otherwise, the available options are Contains and Does Not Contain. Third box value or text. Indicates the information to be matched, which you type in.

If the first menu selection is a date, you can click the arrow to open a calendar that you can navigate to find and select the date you want. Use between two words to find documents that contain both terms, in any order. For example, type paris AND france to identify documents that contain both paris and france. Use before a search term to exclude any documents that contain that term. Or, type paris NOT kentucky to find all documents that contain the word paris but not the word kentucky.

Use to search for all instances of either term. For example, type email OR e-mail to find all documents with occurrences of either spelling. Use to search for all instances that have either term but not both.

Use parentheses to specify the order of evaluation of terms. For example, type white AND whale OR ahab to find all documents that contain either white and whale or white and ahab. The query processor performs an OR query on whale and ahab and then performs an AND query on those results with white. A full-text index is created when someone uses Acrobat to define a catalog of PDFs. Also tried everything about searches in Outlook. Does anybody maybe have the register settings for Adobe 10, with Outlook and Windows 7 32 bits? You would need to configure your server to support this. Add Search Service Role, etc. So I want to index it. How would I do that? Hi Chris, This article talks about a different type of indexing — file indexing by Windows Search, as opposed to creating an index in a PDF document.

Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for your question. The folder properties need to be set to all the contents of files to be indexed. Right click on the folder, select properties, general tab and click the advanced attributes.

We have tried reverting back to an earlier version of Reader as it seems the issue has been present ever since upgrading to DC.

We have re indexed the machine and removed the old index in-case of any corruption, I seem to be running out of options as I have the issue on a customer machine and a local test bench running the same configuration on a clean install. Hi Stephen. I am afraid, I do not have an answer for you. Have you tried contacting Adobe support? Same problem. Adobe does not offer phone support for Adobe Acrobat so you must use the search feature on the website.

Dead end So I am forced to use another product to do searching. You just need to update the search index manually as it does not do it automatically. Beats getting a new machine!
